Twin Sisters Brewery opened a year ago in the Sunnyland Neighborhood of Bellingham, WA. After quite a few adjustments in their outdoor beer garden over the past year, it is finally optimal for beer drinkers of all types, especially moms!
Here are a few reason's I flock to Twin Sisters on a day when mommy craves a beer and the kids need to run off some energy.
The main building itself is a very large industrial building boasting of many windows, a private loft for parties (is it okay to have my kids birthday parties there? Kidding, Sort of...), and large garage doors to welcome the fresh air inside. But it's the beer garden outback that sells this brewery and makes this a busy spot for families with kids.
The brewery has really worked hard at being a good neighbor in this part neighborhood/part industrial side of town. With permission from the city and some smart parking lot planning, we haven't had a problem finding parking that doesn't annoy the neighbors. Especially the new parking lot located in the back, which is perfect for moms. Especially if say, your child falls asleep in the van on the way there and it's a cool enough day with the windows down and the door open to let them sleep as you sit just three feet away in the beer garden. Not saying whether I've personally done this, but I'm not saying it isn't a possibility.
If you're self conscious about grouchy patrons annoyed by kids making too much noise or even just breathing, never fear. There is a separate building with a bar for 21+, which also has an adjacent lawn for sitting and even a 21+ only walk up window. There is also a newly fenced off 21+ portion in the very back, equipped with an outdoor fireplace, chalk wall for the artistically inclined and different sized tables for both intimate and large party occasions.
The main, middle portion of beer garden is full service. There are umbrella tables, a few fire pits with chairs for sitting, and a few Adirondack chairs for longing on the side of the garden dinner area (perfect for breastfeeding). And right in the middle is the.... wait for it... "Children's Corral"! It's a three and a half sided fenced section with lush grass, it's own chalkboard wall, soccer balls and corn hole. Kids feel like they are at a park! Adults can join in, with beer in hand, or sit back at a table with friends and still keep a watchful eye on their kid's behavior.
Twin Sisters also has a healthy kid's menu, crayons for drawing and an area to help yourself to extra water or napkins, when your kid inevitably spills.
Your non-beer loving friends and family can feel included, too. Besides the usual non alcoholic choices, there is a full cocktail drink menu, and two taps dedicated to local hard ciders, as well as a good selection of wine.
The beer itself has only gotten more better over the one years time. There have been a few misses; I wasn't too impressed with the fruit infusions, but there willingness to try some new combinations and flavors keeps me coming back to try what's new or seasonal. I'm not an IPA fan, but I was surprised by how drinkable, and perfectly hoppy the Green IPA was. So much so that I've been thinking of ordering one just for myself.
The Hassel Hef
was super delicious with a strong and smooth malt flavor more reminiscent of a triple Belgian. They are also really good at brewing Saisons. I haven't had one there I didn't like yet and is the usualy my "go to".
And just when you thought that was enough for a PNW Beer Mom, they host many family friendly events, such as the Bellingham Circus Guild performers, an Easter Egg hunt, and a kids carnival.
And just a reminder, these opinions are purely my own, and not monetarily driven.
Check them out for yourself!
